Friday #musicwrap: We’ve got you covered with this week’s buzzing news

Friday #musicwrapWork keeping you from following music news this week? Still recuperating from 4th of July antics? Well here’s what you missed in this weeks #musicwrap!

Pop icon Lady Gaga enjoys listening to her latest single “The Edge of Glory”, we mean of course when it’s covered by former Jonas Brothers’ member Nick Jonas (told you we had you covered!). He performed the song as well as other radio hits at the Westfield Century City Mall in Los Angeles. He followed the song with “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars and “See No More”, the first solo single by Jonas’ brother Joe Jonas. Admiration and appreciation presented itself in the form of tweets between Nick Jonas and Lady Gaga, as she went on to tweet how starstruck she was followed by a link to the video. Jonas replied to Gaga’s complimenting tweet, “@ladygaga the pleasure is all mine. That is a beautiful song. Keep inspiring the world.”

American Idol aired its 10th season finale at the end of May, but there’s still buzz going strong as news that ninth place contestant Pia Toscano has signed a recording contract with Interscope Records. Toscano will be releasing her debut single, “This Time,” July 12th followed by her debut album later this year. She will also be joining the rest of her season 10 Idol alum for an American Idol summer tour that kicks off July 6th in Salt Lake City, Utah and ending September 11th in Rochester, New York.

In last week’s #musicwrap, we informed you of the long forgotten MySpace and its new owners, Specific Media and Justin Timberlake. Since then, people have been wondering what’s going to be done to the site to breathe new life into it. It’s now been hinted by Timberlake’s longtime manager Johnny Wright that there’s word of a talent show or some other way of developing new artists as the main source of revamping Myspace. Wright goes on to say, “We definitely want to bring the industry back to Myspace to really look at the talented people that have put their faces there.” Details are scarce as this is all speculation, but hopefully we’ll see something more tangible in the future!

What a lucky girl Lady Gaga is to be mentioned twice in our weekly #musicwrap. What does she have in common with Adele, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry? In addition to the obvious that they’re all sexy ladies, they’re helping the music business achieve something it hasn’t been able to in nearly eight years: positive growth. Honorable mentions go out to the males though, such as Eminem, Bruno Mars and Mumford & Sons, but it’s definitely these women’s summer to shine. During the first half of this year overall album sales rose 3.6 percent to a whopping 221.5 million. The industry has been suffering a slump since 2004 thanks to extensive Internet piracy and falling album sales, as fans cherry-pick singles on iTunes and other download services.

So what’s your take on all of this? Has Lady Gaga really made that much of a change to the industry? Is Justin Timberlake’s “talent show” idea really going to make that much of a difference for the once-awesome Myspace? Do you like Pia Toscano? And what’s up with Nick Jonas doing so many covers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
